Foods that have been physically or chemically changed from their original condition are referred to as Processed Food. Food processing has been documented throughout history as a way to maintain wholesome meals accessible and palatable during a period when food would be in short supply.


Before we consume them, most foods have been altered, prepared, or packed in some manner. They lie halfway between the little processed (such as salad mix, packaged dry beans, roasted unsalted almonds, or frozen fruits or vegetables) and the highly or ultra-processed (according to some nutritionists) categories (like sugary beverages, chips or smoked sausage). Ingredients such as sweeteners, oils, colours, and preservatives are sometimes added to Processed Foods.


There are also drawbacks to consuming highly processed foods. In addition to their nutritional content, Processed Food can also contain additives, preservatives, and other chemicals that may be harmful in large amounts. For example, some processed meats may contain nitrates, which have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.



Processing can be as simple as cutting, as in the case of vegetables that have been bagged or roasted nuts. A frozen ready-to-eat meal is an example of how complex the addition of preservatives, sugars, salts, and other ingredients can be.
