Pregnancy and Lower-Back Pain

Usually during the later stages of pregnancy, you can expect to experience lower back pain. The reason behind this is the biochemical and physiological changes happening from weight gain. Due to the ever growing baby, the increased weight around the stomach causes the center of gravity in women to shift forward in order to compensate the bodily changes happening. This also means that the posture of the mother need to change in order to compensate, support, and maintain balance in order to walk. Abdominal muscles also need to expand to compensate the growing baby. This can cause them to hyper-extend which makes them weaker and not as efficient. All of these bodily changes happen at a fairly fast rate and cause the lower region of the spine to be pushed forward and thus increasing the strain on the lower back area, causing lower back pain.

Even though back pain is very common in pregnant women and can be seen as a challenge for future moms, it's possible to manage the pain and help maintain a healthy spine while pregnant.

How to Manage Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy

  • Proper sleeping position
  • It is recommended to sleep on your side with a body pillow.
  • Engage in Safe Physical Activity.
  • Lower intensity exercises such as walking and stretching can be very beneficial to reducing strain on the lower back.
