Lead Acid Battery are classified as rechargeable and secondary batteries. Despite the battery's low energy-to-volume and energy-to-weight ratios, it is capable of delivering higher surge currents. This corresponds to the fact that lead acid cells have a high power-to-weight ratio. These are the batteries that turn chemical energy into electrical energy by using lead peroxide and sponge lead. Because of their enhanced cell voltage levels and low cost, these are commonly used in substations and power systems.


Because sealed batteries contain less electrolyte than flooded batteries, Lead Acid Battery are referred to be "acid-starved." The capacity to combine oxygen and hydrogen to form water and prevent dry out while cycling is perhaps the most significant advantage of sealed lead acid. Recombination takes place at a mild pressure of 0.14 bar (2psi). If the gas accumulation becomes too great, the valve acts as a safety vent.


Because sulphuric acid is employed as an electrolyte in Lead Acid Battery, when it dissolves, the molecules in it are disseminated as SO4- (negative ions) and 2H+ (positive ions), which have free mobility. When these electrodes are dipped in the solutions and a DC supply is applied, the positive ions will migrate in the direction of the battery's negative edge. Similarly, the negative ions will travel in the opposite direction of the positive edge of the battery.


This means that during the charging process, the lead cathode element remains as lead, whilst the lead anode is created as dark brown lead peroxide.


When there is no DC supply and a voltmeter is connected between the electrodes, the potential difference between the electrodes is displayed. When a wire is connected between the electrodes, current will flow from the negative to the positive plate via an external circuit, indicating that the cell has the ability to provide an electric form of energy.
