The Riddle Of John Carter

You can't have a good story without an interesting main character. One that is relatable, nuanced, and sets a precedent for readers. Most books help readers grow personally and professionally by being in the shoes of the protagonist; other times, readers are immersed into the world midway as they figure out their plight.

Author Wessam Eldein, with his book, The Quiz, expands upon the book's theme and leaves audiences in a riddle with the main character of his story, John Carter.

What's so strange about Carter, you ask?

Well, what if the introduction of a protagonist included them announcing their demise? That's right, John Carter, 40 years of age, revealed that he would kill himself.

Numerous theories have been circulating, explaining what could've happened, but only those lucky enough to pick up the book know the bigger picture.

But what makes the premise of Wessam's book so intriguing?

Let's peer into the mystery every sci-fi thriller enthusiast is talking about – the riddle of John Carter.

A Teased Dystopia

At the beginning of the book, Carter is given the news that he is the oldest human being on Earth in the year 2035. Even though the proclamation is rather celebratory, there is unease in the statement, an unsettling reality that sinks as readers focus their attention toward a dull and gray Carter. One can tell that is the sight of a man who is broken, battered, and shrouded in loneliness. Carter is rewarded with unlimited resources, but at what cost?

A desolate world burdens John. And from the first page, where John pens his suicide note, he is interrupted by a loud bang, which indicates that he isn't the only one committing suicide.

The Contrast

Contrary to the morbid beginning of the story, John is far from someone who's depressed from his life. When he was twenty-nine years of age, he would chant affirmations of positivity to himself in the mirror.

He was a dreamer, believing that someday he would do something that would protect the entire world.

We all wish to pull off a feat that is bigger than ourselves. That gives our life meaning. John's role model was Clark Kent. This notion builds up overwhelming suspense on what possibly could have gone wrong with John Carter, making him an empty shell of himself.

Wessam Eldein vividly highlights the contrast between the two versions of Carter we witness at the beginning of the book.

The Quiz

The only question remains, why John Carter wants to die?

The answer may be bigger than you think. What's worse, it might just be staring at you dead in the eye as we speak. What if you were told that the world we live in isn't far off from the alleged dystopia riddled at the beginning of the book?

Intrigued? Quench your curiosity as Wessam Eldein's story condenses into a mind-bending read filled with multiverse challenges, journeying through dimensions and a plight to change the world.

The Quiz, is now available on Amazon.
