Poka-Yoke Techniques for Smoother Digital Transformation

Poka-Yoke approaches are being utilised today to prevent errors in processes, products, and services. Poka-Yoke's purpose is to remove faults and blunders by building systems that cannot be broken. Fewer human errors were made and higher quality items were sent by restructuring the process so that the operation could not proceed until the worker inserted the spring into the switch.

Every day, you come across Poka-Yoke. For example, you can't start the microwave until the door is closed, and if you open the door before the timer has finished, it will stop immediately. Furthermore, you frequently make your Poke-Yoke by doing something as basic as taping the keys to your vehicle to anything that you have to carry to work.

Types of Poka-Yoke Techniques

Poka-Yoke techniques are split into three types:

Prevention: This type of Poka-Yoke prevents mistakes from happening. Putting a cover over a button, for example, prevents it from being mistakenly pressed.

Detection: This form of Poka-Yoke detects mistakes and alerts the operator so that they can be corrected. Using colour-coded tags to identify which process step a product is in is an example of this.

Correction: This form of Poka-Yoke automatically corrects the error. A barcode scanner that automatically inputs the correct product information into a computer system is one example of this.

Poka-Yoke is not only utilised in manufacturing but it may be applied to any process where human mistake is possible. It's all about creating structures that can't go wrong.

Poka-Yoke procedures are easy and affordable to apply, yet they can make a significant impact in preventing errors and defects. Using Poka-Yoke practices can help you achieve improved quality, cheaper costs, and increased customer happiness.

Poke-Yoke and the Digital Transformation

Today, there is a significant drive to digitalize operations, yet firms on a worldwide scale are making two critical mistakes.

For starters, they do not optimise their processes before digitising them. This is the subject of another article.

Second, they are not thinking about what could go wrong when the data they are collecting is based on both end customer and employee inputs. As we can see, many firms have simply ignored this, thinking that both consumers and workers will always enter data into the system accurately.

As a result, we have a lot more poor data that will cost more to clean up than if we had spent some time upfront implementing Poke-Yoke throughout the design and development stages.
