Under several brand names, such as Nickel Alloy 188, Haynes® 188, and Udimet 188®, Alloy 188 is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten super alloy. Alloy 188 is exceptionally robust and resistant to corrosion because of its high chromium content combined with trace levels of lanthanum.
Up to 2000°F (1095°C), Alloy 188 has good oxidation resistance, outstanding high-temperature strength, and suflidation resistance. Alloy 188 is readily fabricated, exhibits exceptional metallurgical stability, and may be processed both hot and cold.
Resistance welding, TIG, MIG, electron beam, and other welding techniques are all excellent for Alloy 188.
Many diverse gas turbine engine and aerospace applications use alloy 188 in one or more of its variants.
- Flame holders
- Transition ducts
- Afterburner liners
- Combustion cans
- Spray bars
The chemical composition of Alloy 188 is unique and includes:
- Co 39% balance
- Ni 20-24%
- Cr 21-23%
- W 13-15%
- Mn 1.25% max
- Fe 3% max
If you are looking for a nickel alloy for extreme-temperature applications that is also easy to work with and versatile, Alloy 188 is an excellent choice. Continental Steel can supply Nickel Alloy 188, Haynes® 188, Udimet® 188 in bar, strip, sheet, and wire.
