If Your Flight Is Canceled, What Rights Do You Have?


Unlike a delay, a canceled flight is one that was originally scheduled but does not happen, usually resulting in a flight number change. Passengers are entitled to a ticket refund and possibly airfare compensation for any particular damages caused, regardless of the origin of the aircraft. Additional eu air passenger rights apply to trips inside Europe: airlines are required to provide lump-sum compensation depending on travel distance, as well as rerouting or airfare compensation within seven days.

  • €250 for flights under 1,500 km
  • €400 for intra-community flights or 1,500 to 3,500 km flights
  • €600 for flights exceeding 3,500 km.


Additionally, the airline must provide necessary assistance, such as refreshments, accommodation, and transportation, based on specific delay durations, which could be related to international flight delay compensation claims. If departure delays exceed five hours, cancellation allows ticket refunds or support for return flights from connecting stopovers.


What Entitlements Do You Have If You Experience Overbooking?


Airlines are obligated to ask volunteers who are willing to give up their reservations in return for prearranged perks when overbooked. According to eu air passenger rights passengers have the option to accept or reject the offer presented by the airline.


If no volunteers step up and European laws are followed, flight compensation in the range of €250 to €600, dependent on flight duration and delay, is required.
