9 safety tips to keep in your mind while riding your electric skateboard

Riding a skateboard can be a little unnerving.  Riding an electric skateboard that can reach speeds up to 25 MPH such as the Exway X1 can be extremely exhilarating, but at the same time requires a little forethought.  Here are 9 safety tips that will help make you a safe and responsible rider.

  1. This is perhaps the most obvious of all tips however a lot of people overlook it.  WEAR A HELMET!  No matter how uncool you think a helmet may look, a head wound looks even worse.  Get a properly fitting helmet that is light and snug.  There are a ton of options out there so go to your local store and try on as many as you can.  Get a helmet that fully covers your head and is comfortable.  Don't forget your helmet at home and if you do for the love of Pete don't ride without it!
  1. Start off slow.  No matter how experienced you are on a skateboard, things happen way quicker on an electric board.  If you are starting on your Exway begin in level one (limited to 9 MPH) and work your way up slowly.  There is plenty of time to get good on a board and don't rush it.  Nothing looks kookier than a rider flying down the road blatantly riding at a speed that they are uncomfortable with.
  1. Get comfortable with your brakes.  When the time comes when a car cuts you off, you need to be extremely confident with your braking ability.  Start off by riding down the street and make mock-up scenarios that require you to hit your brakes hard and fast.   Set up a course and end it at a point and try to stop as quickly as possible.  Maintain control and be sure to lean back hard on the board.  Dig your rear foot in to make the most of your traction and understand how long it will take to come to a complete stop.  The Exway X1 has one of the smoothest braking systems on the market so make sure you know how to utilize it.
  1. Don't ride outside of your limits.  Riding an electric skateboard such as an X1 is extremely easy.  With the top speed of 25 MPH and hill climbing ability of 30 % the Exway is an extremely powerful machine.  Don't get overconfident and rush into top gear.  Realize that riding outside of your skill level is a great way to get hurt and will cause you to be sidelined instead of enjoying your electric skateboard.
  1. Don't ride faster than you think you can jump off at any time.  If you are going to fast and something happens where you need to bail, realize that you can only run at a certain speed.  If you come across a situation where you need to bail and have to run it out, realize that you probably can't run 25 MPH.  Ride in control and be ready for anything.  Stay Nimble.
  1. Be aware that drivers don't understand electric skateboards.  When you are heading down the street and a car is pulling out to make a turn, even if the driver locks eyes with you, they are programmed to think that a skateboard is travelling between 5-10 MPH.  They don't realize that you might be going 25 and pull out in front of you.  Make sure that you are always expecting drivers to do the unspeakable and get ready to avoid a dangerous situation.  Expect the unexpected.
  1. Never drink and ride.  Period.
  1. Don't ride in slippery conditions.  Even though the Exway is the most waterproof board on the market, when the roads get wet, skateboards have extremely smooth wheels.  These wheels and wet conditions make for a dangerous situation.  If you have to ride in the rain make sure to take extra caution as your traction will be compromised.
  1. Do not fall asleep at the wheel.  Riding an electric skateboard is a high-risk sport.  Always maintain focus and never take your mind off of the road.  If you do feel distracted pick up the board and walk until you get your mind straight.  Weighing in at 14 pounds, the Exway X1 is one of the lightest boards on the market so walking with it is a breeze.
  1. Know your equipment.  Just because the Exway ESC is one of the smoothest most sophisticated on the market doesn't mean that things can't happen fast.  Understand your equipment because sometimes there isn't enough time to brake to avoid an accident.  Swerving is a great tool to have in your arsenal so if things happen quickly you can dodge your way out of an accident.

Always have fun, ride safe, ride smart.
