A Seattle used game store has reported buying -- and quickly selling -- a copy of a rare NES game.
Pink Gorilla Games said Wednesday that a private seller traded in a copy of Nintendo World Championships 1990 along with a bag of other NES cartridges.
Only a few hundred copies of the sought-after collector's item are thought to exist.
Not joking," the company tweeted Wednesday.
The company later tweeted that it paid $13,000 for the game.
The pictured cartridge also included serial number "0302," indicating a higher number of copies than previously discovered.
SEATTLE—In the decades since 1990's Nintendo World Championship tournament, its unique prize for participants—a competition-class cartridge with timed versions of classic games Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris—has become a sought-after collector's item.
It represents a golden era when Nintendo could host a tournament that captivated a nation (and followed the two-hour commercial of a film that was The Wizard).
Hence, the discovery of any Nintendo World Championship cartridge is a newsworthy event for a certain class of retro-gaming enthusiast.
"You wouldn't believe this," Pink Gorilla co-owner Cody Spencer told Ars Technica in his shop's storage room on Wednesday, after a whirlwind 24 hours concluded with the game's sale to a collector.
“Bored out of my mind”... but not for long
The seller, a man in his mid-30s, wasn't recognized as a regular customer when he walked into the chain's south-Seattle location on Tuesday with "a Safeway bag full of the most boring NES games you can imagine."
Today, there are some crazy good gaming consoles that take realism to a whole new level.
To show their appreciation, Nintendo decided to give away free Wii consoles to South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
The Sony Play Station 1 was a technological gem.
However, the controller of the console was 10% bigger in the US as compared to Japan.
Atari 2600 is indeed the gaming console with the longest life span.
Nintendo Entertainment System was a great gaming console but it failed miserably because of the anti-piracy chip installed in it.
