DO Invest in a gym membership instead, do it with a buddy for extra motivation. The cheaper option is to invest in a good pair of running shoes (and clothes) and start either with walking briskly until you feel confident to run 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and then 40 minutes, 3 - 4 days per week.
