Some suggestions for the preparation and presentation of the degree thesis

Summary

Our Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Computer Science are qualifications issued by the University of Bologna; the Faculty Regulations establish some formal rules governing the issue of such qualifications.

This document is intended to help students of three-year or master's degree programs to choose, write and present a thesis (or "dissertation") in line with usual standards. The suggestions we will give are formal, that is typographical or editorial and in any case on the development process of the thesis "product". The content of the dissertation remains entrusted for obvious reasons to the creativity of the candidate and the sensitivity of his supervisor.

When and to whom a thesis is requested

The thesis is the final document of the period that the student spent at the University. The thesis is usually requested by the student when one or at most two exams are missing.

The thesis has a value in credits, which are earned when the final exam is passed (thesis defence). In many cases it is a good idea to combine the internship with the dissertation, however, the two activities are always distinct and subject to separate verification.

The thesis can be requested from any teacher of his own course of study. Usually, the candidate first questions the teachers of the courses that have most interested him. The request usually concerns a generic topic that the student asks the teacher to explore (eg thesis on "complexity of cryptographic algorithms" or "project of applications in XML"). If the student has specific interests, he or she can also propose a specific topic. In particular, this is often the case with the so-called external thesis, i.e. those carried out in institutions or companies. It should be noted that the teacher is not obliged to assign a thesis to anyone who asks for it.

If the thesis work takes place within an external institution or commercial company, there will be two speakers: an external speaker (employee of that institution or company) and an internal speaker (a professor of the Degree Course).

The thesis is an original and personal work (Italian law punishes both plagiarism and the lack of personal commitment). However, it is permissible to develop the thesis in collaboration with another person who is also simultaneously a candidate for the degree, provided that the two dissertations, in the end, are substantially different.

For our Degree Programs, it is allowed to write the thesis in English.

Sometimes my students ask me what they should "take for granted" when writing their thesis; in other words, who they should ideally contact during the thesis writing phase. Given that the author of the thesis is the student, therefore every stylistic and content responsibility is his, my advice is very simple: since the main (perhaps only!) The reader will be the supervisor, they must write for him (i.e. for me!). This means that they can take some things for granted, for example, those that are typically taught in the degree program, especially in the courses I teach.

Entire books have been written on the art of writing dissertations. The most classic is that of Umberto Eco ("How to make a thesis", Bompiani): it was written for graduates in the humanities, but most of his advice is also valid for our students. Get it and read it at the beginning of the thesis development process (NB: for my undergraduates, this is a must). A more recent book is that of Emilio Matricciani ("The scientific thesis", Paravia 2000).

 Tools

Some word processing program is used to write the thesis. Any program is fine, provided you use it with awareness: in other words, it is important to have the program manual available and to familiarize yourself well with the tool you are using.

The use of automatic pagination tools, be they sophisticated formats such as LaTeX, or word processor macro commands (called styles in Microsoft Word for example) is highly recommended.

If you use LaTeX and write in Italian, you should use the "book" style with commands capable of breaking words using the Italian hyphenation (ie the Babel package with the Italian option).

In addition to the dissertation, some students also produce a WWW site that "accompanies" the development of the thesis. an excellent idea: try to manage all the thesis documentation in HTML or .pdf on your website. At the end of the thesis, I also ask my students for a CD-ROM version of all the material produced. For removing Plagiarism from your document you can use an AI-based Plagrism checker to remove plagiarism from your dissertation or documents.
