Taking a Break: Resting & Relaxing

Our body and our minds need a break…starting a hobby can do wonders!

Sometimes we just need to take a break from life for a short time. We are not saying to stop everything, because of course you have goals you want to achieve and bigger milestones you want to accomplish. We get it! Regardless of where you are in the stage of life, career, etc., we all need some alone time. Time to reflect, decompress and just reset.

Spending time with family is one thing, but there was a time in all of our lives that we just played as kids. We played and it was awesome and pure joy. Even as adults, we need that. It may not be with playing in the sandbox, but it could be getting back to playing an instrument or maybe doing hikes by yourself, or with a club that is outside your family and circle of friends.

Sometimes we will ask a person and they will say, I don’t know what hobby I would start. It could be as simple as getting back into reading your novels. As trashy as they may be or as SciFI as they are, get back to reading them because it will ease your mind, and you will be in that land of fun for that period of time. It could be all you need for that day to reset and get on with the world.

During the quarantine I got back to playing my electric guitar again and really enjoying it. I also got back into a hobby that I truly loved as a kid and that was collecting and opening sports cards. Both of these hobbies put my mind at ease and I can zone off, but have pure enjoyment in these activities. At one end, I love playing the electric guitar and it reminds me of all the hair metal and MTV videos from the 1980’s and how all of those musicians were Untouchable. The sports cards make it fun to go out in the community and try to find them, because they are not easy to find, and when you do, it is so much fun to open them.

The one thing is that some hobbies may require an investment, either small or large, so be responsible when starting something. I would recommend if you are starting an instrument, start with a low end model (cheaper version) and if you stick with it then you can make a larger investment. I already have a few guitars from the past, so I am good in that arena, but the sports card collecting world has changed dramatically and I look at the hobby today and it is super expensive.

For example, a pack of sports cards may cost anywhere from 5.99 to 39.00 and that is at retail pricing, like at Target. If you cannot buy them at retail, then you have to buy them on the secondary market like your local hobby shop or the next tier, Ebay. Where those 5.99 packs can go for $40 and up for the same pack of cards

That is why I am saying, if you love a hobby that can be expensive, start out first to see if you will stick with it, do all of your research so you know what to look for, and then start enjoying it. If you are loving it and it really makes things fun and it takes you to another world in your mind, then awesome. It will help you reset and just give your mind a break.

Like everything, do your hobby in moderation so it is a special place for you to escape for that period of time, but when you get back to finishing that work project or helping your child with school, etc,, you are fresh and ready to hit the ground running.

Here are some quick examples of some of the hobbies our clients partake in:

  1. Gardening
  2. Pottery
  3. Art painting
  4. Needle Point
  5. Learning a musical instrument or playing one again
  6. Learning a new language or brushing up on one that you learned a while ago but need to fine tune it.
  7. Going shopping for antiques
  8. Collecting something like: stamps, sports cards, coins, etc.
  9. Volunteering
  10. Maybe going back to school to take one class or two in something that interests me. Sometimes universities love to have outsiders come in audit classes.
  11. Hiking alone or with a club
  12. Registering for adventure races
  13. Traveling
  14. Cooking – taking cooking lessons
  15. Starting a side business – small enough to enjoy but not stress out over

These are just some quick examples, but your hobby can be whatever gives you that sense of enjoyment. There is a term called, FLOW. I know a lot of us have experienced this and this is what it is. You are in a state of flow when everything around you does not exist except what you are doing. If someone were to call your name, it would scare the hell out of you. You are in that moment and thoroughly enjoying it. You are so focused on playing those sets of notes on the piano or painting that tree that that is all you can think about at that moment. That is being in the state of FLOW. Your heart, lungs and brain are at ease, and that is something that we all need to do often.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, or want to share your hobbies, that would be great.

Cheers,

Kisar
