Holistic health is a general approach to life that considers various multidimensional facets of well-being. It promotes people to identify the "whole person" within themselves: mind, body, emotions, spirituality, and social. It views health as the expression of a personality, an integrated system of values, beliefs, and behaviors. People who practice holistic health often claim that their approach to wellness empowers people by providing them with tools for living their lives in balance with their mind, body, and spirit. Although a holistic approach may appear to be contrary to traditional Western approaches to health and well-being, holistic health practices can help practitioners find new ways of approaching health and achieving greater well-being.

Holistic health incorporates a variety of perspectives on health, disease, and well-being. For example, some holistic health practitioners believe in the necessity of building psychological and emotional resilience to physical illness and healing from physical pain. This view assumes that although the body has its healing capacities, it can be strengthened through consistent self-care and by encouraging the proper mental, emotional, and physical states necessary for optimal physical health. Psychologists who support spiritual wellness include John Stein's work on the positive benefits of meditation. With its focus on breathing and spirituality. Therefore, holistic health can help people with chronic diseases, including arthritis, osteoporosis, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, obesity, depression, anxiety, fear of death, or suicidal thoughts. The holistic approach also helps people who have a strong sense of personal responsibility for improving their overall health.

By promoting wellness, holistic health encourages the individual to take responsibility for improving their lifestyle and health. In addition, it offers an alternative to illness by helping the person find meaningful connections to their internal and external environment. In this way, wellness becomes a self-sustaining process instead of a temporary fix.
