The Four Stages Of Cannabis Growth Explained

If you want to grow cannabis plants, either indoor or outdoor, you need to understand their lifecycle.

Cannabis, like all other plants, go through elaborate stages of growth. From the time the seeds are sown to their flowering and harvesting, you should know how to care for the plants in each of those stages.

If you wish to get the best out of those cannabis seeds you have just planted, you need to understand the below given stagewise development of cannabis growth.

1 – Seed Germination

The first stage of the cannabis plant's growth cycle begins with the seed itself. A seed that is hard and dry with a brownish color is ready to be sown.

You can germinate the seeds directly in the soil and keep them in a dark place, adequately moisturized. Alternatively, you can also put them in a cup of water or between a wet paper towel.

The germination stage would last anywhere between three to ten days, at the end of which the seeds will sprout leaves and roots.

2 – Seedling Stage

In this cycle stage, the plants are very fragile and need 18-24 hours of sunlight. The seedlings grow rapidly if they receive enough moisture and humidity.

Leaves of mature cannabis plants typically have anywhere from 5 to 13 fingers per leaf. As the plants grow, they develop more fingers until they reach their full growth.

Cannabis plants are considered to be seedlings until they develop the full set of fingers per leaf. This stage lasts from two to three weeks on average.

3 – Vegetative Stage

Once the seedlings develop the full seven sets of pointed leaves, they reach their vegetative stage. The plants' growth truly takes off at this stage.

The plants are now relocated into a larger pot, and the roots and leaves are developing rapidly. The plants will now require more water.

It is important to remove the male and intersex plants at this stage as their pollen sacs could burst and pollinate the female plants.

4 - Flowering Stage

The flowering stage is the final stage of growth in cannabis plants. To induce this stage, the plants must receive 10-12 hours of total darkness,

The plants begin to develop buds that are covered in resin. Most cannabis strains begin to flower in 8-9 weeks.

Resist from pruning the plants in the flowering stage, as it could disrupt hormones. Also, consider supporting the buds with a trellis. Once buds are fully matured, it's time for harvest.
