Is Lox Smoked Salmon?

Is lox a Lie? No, but it isn't cold smoked salmon. Here's how to know what you're buying.

What's the difference between lox and smoked salmon?

"The lox salmon breakfast bagel is a must-try!" says the menu as you go into a restaurant. A picture of a bagel with cream cheese and thinly sliced salmon lox is next to it, but is it lox? It is most likely, so how do you tell the difference between lox and smoked salmon?

Cold smoked salmon is made by soaking the entire fillet in brine, smoking it at a low temperature for a long time (up to 18 hours), and then thinly slicing and packaging it. Lox is a traditional dish made from the belly of a smoked salmon that has been salt-cured.

Because the terms have become identical in recent years, the best method to tell if you're buying lox is to ask if it's been smoked (the answer should be no) and if it's belly meat (the answer should be yes). Both are great, but if you're shopping for lox, keep in mind that it's not cold-smoked salmon. Why do we recommend cold-smoked salmon as an alternative? Because you've probably been chewing down on smoked salmon the whole time.

Let's clear up any other misunderstandings about smoked and cured salmon while we're on the subject. Where lox is salt-cured, gravlax is fixed using a mix of ingredients, including salt, sugar, dill, and often aquavit and spices. You can buy frozen wild-caught seafood online from our website to add it to your following recipe this weekend.

What makes Organic Ocean's smoked salmon the best?

Even though farmed and wild salmon is cold smoked, it is easy to distinguish between them. The bright red meat of wild salmon comes from a diet of shrimp and krill, both of which contain naturally occurring astaxanthin (which turns flamingos pink). The pigmenting substances added to the pellets give farmed Atlantic salmon a false orange color and large white fat lines. Wild salmon has a more lively flavor, less saturated fat, and fewer calories than farmed salmon and is higher in nutrients like potassium, zinc, and iron.

How to Prepare Organic Ocean - Heavenly Smoked Salmon

Our Heavenly Smoked Salmon can be used in various ways. It's delicious on a toasted bagel with cream cheese, red onions, and olives for breakfast, or put it to your handmade pita sandwich with pesto sauce if you're feeling experimental. Crepes, seafood chowder, or scrambled eggs are just a few ways to use it. It's also known for its sushi rolls, and we recommend adding them to your cart if you want to make your own. You can include this excellent seafood into your recipes in a variety of ways.
