Diet and Feeding Guide for New Pacman Frog Owners

There are several species of Pacman frogs in the wild. Each species has different diets in the wild.

But they all pretty much share identical diets for pet store-bought Pacman frog species.

If you are a new frog owner, here are some quick guidelines to help you determine what your frog eats.

Check the Size of the Food

To determine if a food item is suitable for your frog, compare it to the size of its head. If you stick two fingers as far as you can inside their mouths as they open them as wide as possible, that should give you an idea about how big their mouths are.

Then look at what kind of food it is and decide if it is too big or too small.

For example, three good things for your fantasy Pacman frog are mealworms, nightcrawlers, and crickets. The mealworm is the size of the frog's head, a prominent cricket is a little bigger than the frog's eyes wide open, and a small earthworm is about half as giant as their eyes open.

On the other hand, three things that are not good for your fantasy Pacman frog are African dwarf frogs, goldfish, and toads.

Test the Food

The second method for determining whether or not your pet frog will eat a food item is to test it. Just drop it in the tank if the frog eats it, good. If it doesn't, get rid of it.

Feeding Methods

Pacman frog feeding is a daunting task. They are bottom feeders with no teeth. These frogs use their tongues to catch prey items and swallow them whole. The frog will need to be trained to eat the food you provide for it.

The first few giving anything new, do so in an area with limited space, so the frog feels comfortable eating there. The method is called target training. It's just like when you train a dog to sit.

After they are comfortable eating there, you can present the food in open areas to eat independently. It would help if you did this until it is a habit to eat prey items every time they see them.

Food Types

Pacman frogs are generalists. You can feed your fantasy Pacman frog most things except insects with hard shells, giant insects, or pests, so absolutely no fire ants! They will eat anything from fish to earthworms to crickets.

The best food for them is live prey items because they are still fresh when the frog eats them. It is also less stressful for the frog to eat smaller prey because they will be swallowed whole.

If you can't find live prey items, you should go after frozen or dried foods. These are stored in the freezer or cupboard without much processing, so they are still nutritious when thawed out and eaten by your frog.
