5 ways to use positive behavior support strategies in your classroom

Positive behavior support refers to any of the positive strategies and approaches you can use to encourage a student to become a more positive and engaged learner. It can involve classroom strategies and techniques that are implemented to get students involved, encourage positive peer interactions, and get a student to behave or respond in the desired way.

If you are unsure how to use positive behavior support techniques in your classroom, check out these 5 ways in which you can implement positive behaviour management in the classroom.

1. Be clear about what you want the student to do

First of all, be clear about the outcomes you want to see from the student. It’s important to know your intentions and goals before you begin.

Sometimes students may need to be directed by the teacher to a specific behavior, whether that’s being calm and quiet or paying attention and making contributions. If you’re not sure how to direct a specific behavior, you should always have some behavior support materials (such as worksheets or posters) on hand to guide you and your students.

2. Create an environment where everyone feels safe and supported

Secondly, it’s important to have a safe and supportive environment in the classroom. Not only does this help to make your classroom a more inviting place for the students, but it also helps them to learn and improve. Students feel comfortable, happy, and engaged if they feel safe and supported in your classroom, so they are more likely to go that extra mile for you.

3. let students know what’s expected of them

Thirdly, you should be clear with your students about what you expect from them. This is another important tool to get students involved and involved in the learning process. There are many benefits to this, such as students being engaged and making better contributions to learning.

At the start of each lesson, it’s important to share with students what you would like them to do in that lesson. This could be things such as being quiet and listening, participating and contributing, or being calm and engaged.

4. Don’t use negative behaviors to try and get results

Another thing to keep in mind when using positive behavior support techniques is not to try and correct negative behavior through fear of consequences. This is very important because it’s likely to harm the learning of the students and may even lead to increased negative behaviors.

In the classroom, there are many scenarios where you may want to use corrective techniques to direct students’ attention or to make them aware of what you want them to do. You should use these techniques in a matter-of-fact, non-threatening manner, so the students know that you’re trying to help them, not trying to make them feel bad.

5. Monitor the student’s progress in the positive behaviour

It’s important to have an effective and supportive monitoring system in place that will help you to ensure that you’re working with the student to help them to move forward with their learning.
