RPL Nursing Entry Criteria

If you want to use the RPL nursing pathway, then read this blog. Here, we will familiarize you with the eligibility criteria for admission to 2-year Master’s programme.

Northumbria University has earned a reputation for excellence and innovation in nursing education. The university is working closely with its NHS partners to deliver a pre-registration Nursing Science Masters that include the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s ‘Future Nurse’ standards, to assist you in leading your profession.

This 2-year master’s will make it possible for graduates from any undergraduate subject to build to build on their experience in a caring role, and graduate with NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) Registration. Studying within the requirements of the new NMC criteria means that you will be prepared for rapid career progression within Children and Young People’s Nursing, especially when combined with the high-standard attributes that you attain as a Northumbria postgraduate.

You will study partially at its Coach Lane Campus, and partially on placement, with both strands running alongside each other to give you an integrated approach to practice and theory. You will study within the standard university semester system, allowing time in the Easter and summer breaks for extra projects and internships or a rest.

The programme will equip you to become creative, inventive, curious, and collaborative in your care. It will make it possible for your compassion to flourish within an evidence-based approach. Apart from that, it will also enable you to make a genuine impression on the health and wellbeing of your young clients and patients.

As an applicant, you need to normally have:

At least a 2:2 honors degree or equivalent in any subject, and GCSEs at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above in English Language and Mathematics.

Other subject qualifications, equivalent professional qualifications, or/and related work experience will be taken into account on an individual basis.

Other requirements (RPL nursing way):

You need to attend an interview. After the interview, you will be asked to complete an RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) document to give proof of undertaking at least 500 hours of occupation or voluntary care work, and a minimum of 700 hours of appropriate theoretical learning and understanding, which can be proved from a previous degree and practice.

Admission is subject to a suitable DBS Enhanced Certificate and a satisfying health check. You need to fulfill the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s suitability for registration requirements.

Covid vaccinations:

Before you read about the RPL nursing pathway provided below, you need to know this fact. The government approved legislation asking for vaccination as a deployment condition, which was due to start from the 1st of April 2022. The Secretary of State announced that it is being reflected upon and is set to be revoked. The decision of the government is subject to parliamentary process and will need further consultation and a vote to be approved into legislation.

The government has given a sign that it plans to work with Royal Colleges and professional regulators to strengthen guidance and consult on updates to the Department of Health and Social Care’s Code of Practice for regulated providers to strengthen the needs about COVID-19, which applies to all Care Quality Commission (CQC registered) providers of all health and social care in England.

The legislation that was approved would have needed you to give proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the university before you join your programme. The legal requirement on deployment is fixed to be revoked, vaccination against COVID-19 (unless exempt) is necessary to save both service users and the workforce across the social care and health sector. As the law has not changed yet, and the university is not sure of what local practice placement providers will need, it recommends that you get any COVID-19 vaccinations that you are eligible for, before your programme starts. As soon as it is known what the final Government decision is regarding this matter, the university will be back in touch with more information.

International qualifications:

If you have not studied a UK qualification, you need to know how your qualifications compare to the standard entry criteria, by choosing the country you achieved the qualification in.

English language eligibility criteria:

If you are an international applicant, then you need to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in the written section and a minimum of 7 in the reading, speaking, and listening sections.

The university accepts a huge number of UK and international qualifications instead of IELTS.
