Nowadays most of us are worried about omicron, a new variant of Covid-19 virus. There are many question regarding omicron, but most important is what is omicron and how to prevent it.

So let us understand what is omicron first. The word omicron refers to the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet. Greek letters are used to identify major COVID-19 variants. A new COVID-19 Variant was identified in South Africa on 24 November 2021 and detected in Canada soon after. This variant of COVID was named as “Omicron” by the World Health Organization’s TAG-VE or Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution on 26 November 2021.

Omicron variant is technically known as the B.1.1.529 variant. It was first labeled by the WHO as a “Variant Under Monitoring” (VUM). It was named Omicron when it was reclassified as a “Variant of Concern” (VOC). This category is reserved for variants associated with a higher risk to public health. Recently a new variant of omicron B.2 has emerged in Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

A lot of the Omicron symptoms are looking like the common cold or viral illness of the respiratory tract. Top five symptoms of omicron are runny nose, headache, sneezing, persistent cough and sore throat. Most common symptoms for Omicron are fever, cough, loss of taste or smell and tiredness. Less common symptoms are sore throat, headache, aches, pains, diarrhea, skin rash, discoloration of fingers or toes. One prominent symptom of omicron is low back pain as found through a study from south Africa.

The symptoms of Omicron develop quickly once infected. Several studies have found that the time it takes to develop symptoms after being exposed also known as incubation period is about three days.
