Public relations agencies and the fine line of advertising

Public relations agencies are the creative experts in all kinds of PR, advertising, print media and digital marketing.

When is it PR and when is it advertising? The public relations agencies in Australia are some of the most creative agencies in the world. If you ask them about the difference between PR and advertising, or between PR and marketing, or between PR and communications, they will tell you that there is a very fine line separating all of these things.

Public relations has changed ever since the internet came along. And while the lines might be a little blurred between PR, advertising, marketing and communicating, a PR agency knows exactly which strategy should be used, and when.

PR and strategy

Let’s say a theatre wants the public to know about a new show. The public relations agencies will find out about the show. When is it starting, who is starring, where is the show on, how long will it be on, what is the premise, who will it appeal to, and so on? They will understand that the theatre company wants to bring awareness to the public about the show. They want to bring awareness to the public about the actors. But they also want people, the public, to book tickets to see the show. At the end of the day, they want to put bums on seats. Their strategy will therefore include basic PR, a press release or many about the show, but also marketing. The marketing could be on the radio, which always works for theatre, but it could also be digital. And digital also works and always works. So a good PR agency has to be strategic and look at the different media platforms and come up with the right strategy, depending on what it is that they are giving ‘PR’ to.

Cost of PR

If a PR company takes out a full-page ad in a newspaper, which could be advertising or it could be communications, this is going to be expensive. Some companies might need to do this. If a PR company thinks TV is the way to go, great, but the costs are high. Can the customer afford this? Or should the PR agency be looking at a string of digital ads? These are all options that will be discussed and strategised, with the right option or campaign being offered to the client, depending on their product and their market and their needs. The costs differ from service to service, and a good PR company will offer all kinds of services as they will have all kinds of and all sizes of clients.

PR experience

When you choose a PR company to work with, go with the PR company that has experience and a good reputation. Go with the PR company who you trust and who can show you results from previous campaigns. You don't have to go with the biggest or the best PR company, but do go with a PR company that knows what they are doing. There are brilliantly talented people in Australia and our public relations agencies in Australia have worldwide reputations.
