Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Teens and their Parents

Just wonderful words from a mom that came to us exhausted from the revolving doors of multiple hospitalizations with her daughter. We coach our clients through their crisis. We work together to figure out how an event turns into unbearable thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We help families learn to truly understand one another. Most importantly the earlier parents get their sensitive children help, the less time they suffer. We are a practice that specializes in emotional sensitivity, reactivity, and those who take a longer time to get over things. We talk about acceptance when you walk through our doors, push for change, and offer hope.

When a child is born emotionally sensitive the environment may not respond in a way that helps them learn how to regulate their emotions. For instance, your child seems to cry over everything.  You may respond with something like, “crying will not get you what you want.” Many kids would hear that and just stop. For the emotionally sensitive child it affects them differently. They learn to not trust their feelings and learn that what they feel, how they act does not make sense. When they are teens, they find other ways to quiet their emotions which may be through harmful behaviors. Some of the behaviors may include self-harm, suicidal thinking, drinking, or drugs.

We teach hands on skills to bring down emotions in a crisis, how to not make things worse when emotions are building. How to respond in an effective way that helps you and your loved one.  DBT is a treatment that is evidenced based and has transformed lives.
