2023 Lucid Air Sapphire First Look Review: Checkmate, Plaid

The Tesla Model S Plaid has been comfortably perched on its throne as the world's quickest production sedan ever since its launch, but the Lucid Air Sapphire has arrived to change all of that. Sporting Lucid's first tri-motor powertrain, the Sapphire produces over 1,200 horsepower and is claimed to hit 60 mph in under two seconds. It marks the first of what will be more high-performance Lucid models to bear the Sapphire moniker in the future. More than just an extra motor, Lucid has also upgraded the brakes and tweaked the chassis to cope with the car's phenomenal power. There is one caveat, though: the Air Sapphire is over $100,000 more expensive than the Model S Plaid. Justifying that premium will be the Sapphire's toughest task, but as a sedan that can deliver hypercar performance with S-Class luxury, perhaps it has no equal.

When Is The Lucid Air Sapphire Coming Out?

The Lucid Air Sapphire's specific release date remains unknown, but reservations are set to go live in August 2022. Production will begin in the first half of 2023, so expect the first deliveries to take place midway through the year.

2023 Lucid Air Sapphire Price And Competition

Not many will be able to afford the cost of the world's most powerful production sedan. The 2023 Lucid Air Sapphire's price will begin at a staggering $249,000 in the USA, excluding destination charges and options. Suddenly, the Tesla Model S Plaid doesn't seem all that expensive at its MSRP of $135,990. Even when fully loaded with expensive options like the Full Self-Driving suite, the Plaid is still far cheaper at $156,990. But the Air Sapphire has performance matching the $2 million Rimac Nevera - so maybe it's not all that bad.
