Importance Of Clearance Between Die and Punch

Proper clearance between the die and punch is important for piercing a good hole more efficiently-

 

●      A big burr on the die side and additional rollover distortion where the punch enters the material are the effects of excessive punch and die clearance.

 

●      There will be little rollover distortion around the hole where the punch penetrates the material if there is adequate clearance between the punch and the die. When the fracture line generated by the punch and the fracture line defined by the size of the die collide, the material splits, forming the hole, and the punch leaves behind a region of vertical burnishing. There will be a very little burr on the die side.

 

●      When the die clearance is insufficient, the fracture lines of the punch and die do not meet, which necessitates a second shear of the material to create the hole. This second shear increases the amount of tonnage needed to create the hole, and in extreme cases, it causes the second region of vertical to burnish to form inside the hole, which will grip the punch as it is being extracted, necessitating more stripping force to remove Due to the higher tonnage required to manufacture the hole and the additional stripping force required to remove the punch, premature punch failure in the form of chipping or cracking of the punch can occur.

 

 

How Does Calculator Help Estimate Die and Punch Clearance?

A die clearance calculator can be used to determine the proper die clearance. Examine the slug and hole to ensure that the die clearance is optimal. Tighter clearance is required to avoid an unacceptable burr on the die side of the hole.

 

The top third of the punch slug, when viewed from the side, should be sheared, burnished, and the same size as the punch. The remaining material is often dull, ripped, and the same size as the die.

 

There will be two areas of burnishing on the side of the slug if there was a secondary shear. If more than about a third of the side of the punch slug is sheared and burnished, or if there are two areas where the slug is sheared and burnished,
