Ten Mistakes You Want to Avoid When Hiring a Virtual Assistant

Knowing where your own strengths lie is the key to success.

By spending 90% of your time working those strengths, in what we call your zone of genius, is where you’ll see real change.

As virtual assistants and virtual business managers, we’ve already seen that transformation in the clients we work with.

We know that by outsourcing you too will …

📎 Free up your time and space to work in your zone of genius, doing more of what you should be doing every day.

📎 Compliment your skillset with the expertise we offer, without the commitment or cost of employees.

📎 Have someone take care of the details and manage projects while partnering with you on a strategic level.

Mistakes made when hiring a VA is more common than you might think! If you’ve had a bad experience it can put you off trying again. Please, don't be put off. A good hire, like any good hire, will be the solution you need to free you up and start getting the right results 💥

1. Not setting clear goals

One of the worst things you can do is assume that your VA knows exactly what you want and how you want it without being told.

2. Not setting clear expectations

Identify targets or deliverables you want your VA to meet, ensure that the applicants know exactly what would be expected of them.

3. No procedures

By taking the time now to ensure your procedures are detailed and current, the messy back and forth on how your processes should be executed is eliminated. These can be as simple as a recorded Loom.

4. Not taking the time to train your VA

Hold a couple of sessions to educate your VA about where your business is at, where it’s going and what is required of them to add value.

5. Not auditing your applicants

Vetting an applicant is much more than asking a couple of questions and requesting some referrals. You’re trusting them with your business. We use a comprehensive application process to weed out any ... weeds.

6. Not prepared for working remotely

If you haven't worked with support staff remotely be prepared for a slightly different way of working. Trust plays a huge factor so go with your instincts when you interview.

7. Don't hire your VA for the tasks

You’ll get much more value from your virtual assistant when you’re focused on outcomes rather than tasks.

8. Hire VA's who know their zone of genius

You'll enjoy a much better quality of work and return on your investment by hiring specialist VAs as opposed to good all-rounders.

9. Don't hire too many VAs too quickly

A word of caution, the bigger your team the more time you’ll spend managing them. It's at this stage we recommend working with a VBM to manage your team for you.

10. Don't hire for the wrong reasons

Crucially, identify what you don’t do, can’t do or shouldn’t be doing and look for a VA who fits these needs. You are looking for a match in both personality and skills.
