Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi

Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Yojana, is a government scheme launched by the Indian government in February 2019. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to small and marginal farmers in India.

Under this scheme, eligible farmers receive direct cash transfers of Rs. 6,000 per year, payable in three installments of Rs. 2,000 each. The money is directly transferred to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, with the first installment being paid between December and March of the financial year, and subsequent installments being paid in April-July and August-November.

The scheme is aimed at providing financial assistance to farmers, who are among the most vulnerable sections of society. The majority of farmers in India are small and marginal, and they often face difficulties in accessing credit and other forms of financial assistance. The Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme is aimed at addressing this problem by providing direct cash transfers to farmers.

The scheme is expected to benefit around 145 million farmers in India. The government has allocated a budget of Rs. 75,000 crore for the scheme, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.

To be eligible for the scheme, farmers must meet certain criteria. Firstly, they must be resident Indian citizens. Secondly, they must be small and marginal farmers, who own less than two hectares of land. Thirdly, they must be actively engaged in agriculture.

The Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme has been widely welcomed by farmers and has been lauded as a step in the right direction towards improving the livelihoods of farmers in India. The scheme has been implemented across all states and union territories of India, and the government has also set up a dedicated website for the scheme, which allows farmers to register and check the status of their application.

One of the key benefits of the scheme is that it provides direct cash transfers to farmers, which can help them to meet their immediate financial needs. This can help to improve their standard of living and reduce their reliance on moneylenders and other informal sources of credit. Additionally, the scheme is expected to provide a boost to the rural economy by increasing the purchasing power of farmers.

However, the scheme has also faced some criticism. One of the main criticisms is that the scheme only covers small and marginal farmers, leaving out large landowners. Some have also questioned the effectiveness of the scheme in addressing the underlying problems faced by farmers, such as inadequate irrigation facilities and low crop yields.

Despite these criticisms, the Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme is an important step towards improving the lives of farmers in India. The scheme has the potential to provide much-needed financial assistance to small and marginal farmers, and can help to reduce poverty and increase rural prosperity. The scheme also represents a significant commitment by the Indian government towards improving the lives of farmers, and highlights the important role that agriculture plays in the Indian economy.
