Whatever Sonos is planning for its next speaker, it would appear to include Bluetooth connectivity, according to new devices filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Two new pieces of hardware have been logged with the FCC, the Verge reports, and one of them comes with Bluetooth on board.

It would be the first Sonos speaker to launch with Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi capabilities.

At the moment you need to hook up Sonos speakers to your Wi-Fi network at home in order to beam music to them from a phone, tablet or laptop on the same network.

Bluetooth would allow direct phone-to-speaker connectivity.

Sonos Google Assistant support is expanding

One of two devices recently filed by Sonos with the FCC is a Bluetooth speaker, The Verge can confirm.

In the filing for product model S17, Sonos directly states that it’s “a high-performance wireless speaker and part of the Sonos sound system.

The device’s primary function will be for streaming with Wi-Fi, but also features Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth Low Energy, used for simplified setup.” (Emphasis added by The Verge.)

No other previous Sonos speaker has supported Bluetooth music playback, though the Sonos One includes BLE for the same reason of easier setup.

The product label for S17 features a curved blue line running across it, which could be a reference to the speaker’s unique functionality in the Sonos lineup.

The filing also mentions that this unannounced Sonos product includes USB-C and an ethernet jack.

It was just a few months ago that I wrote about the Naim Mu-so 2, an update to one of the first high-end streaming speakers.

I’m currently in the process of testing that model, and it delivers remarkable sound quality in a soundbar-like body.

But for many spaces, it’s kind of overkill.

I’m just going to call it the Qb 2.

Naim is a premium audio company.

Like its bigger sibling, the Qb 2 can play music through Google Cast, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal, Bluetooth (SBC/AAC), UPnP, and Roon.

While most soundbars, too, are exorbitantly priced, there are countless others available that are being sold for less than $100 but provide almost the same audio performance as their high-end counterparts.

A genuine bang-for-your-buck example is the Megacra Soundbar, which has earned an excellent 4.1 out of 5 stars rating on Amazon.

Upgrade your home theater setup for just $70.

The Megacra soundbar measures 38 inches across and looks exactly like most soundbars: Long, slim, and black, which will nicely complement your TV.

Appearance-wise, the soundbar doesn’t scream cheap by any means.

All its buttons are found on the right side, including the power button, the volume control buttons, and the play/pause button if you’re playing music via Bluetooth connection (yes, it supports Bluetooth).

Amazon says that it’s investigating reports that its hardware supplier Foxconn, which produces Amazon Echo and Kindle hardware for the company, has violated labor laws by requiring teenaged workers to work overtime and night shifts, as reported by The Guardian.

The issue is specifically that the students — who are between the ages of 16 and 18 and are legally hired as “interns” — were working overtime and night shifts.

Chinese labor laws allow students over the age of 16 to work in factories, but they prohibit overtime and night shifts.

An account from China Labor Watch details the conditions at the factory further.

In addition to the extra shifts (which the students are said to be forced to work by teachers or else they’ll be fired), the report also notes that student intern workers receive lower wages and poorer benefits.

Foxconn acknowledged to The Guardian that there was an issue, saying, “there have been instances in the past where lax oversight on the part of the local management team has allowed this to happen and, while the impacted interns were paid the additional wages associated with these shifts, this is not acceptable and we have taken immediate steps to ensure it will not be repeated.”

Happy one-year anniversary, I guess, to the Samsung Galaxy Home, which was announced a year ago today.

The Bixby speaker was announced at the Note 9 launch in 2018, we just had the Note 10 launch in 2019, and the event came and went without a ship date or even a mention for Samsung's smart speaker.

The Galaxy Home was supposed to be Samsung's answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home—a smart speaker with a voice assistant inside, but the development is taking forever.

The Galaxy Home's absence at Samsung's latest event didn't go unnoticed by the media.

Samsung confirmed to The Verge the device isn't cancelled, saying, “We’re continuing to refine and enhance the Galaxy Home prior to launch, and look forward to sharing more with Galaxy fans soon.”

Samsung's whole assistant push with Bixby always seemed questionable, as it puts Samsung in the position of having to be an ecosystem creator, something it has not typically done.

Naim Audio has introduced Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation, a relatively small all-in-one wireless speaker that brings ‘extensive’ hardware and software upgrades over the original model launched in 2016.

The unveiling follows Naim’s introduction of the Mu-so 2nd Generation speaker in May, a larger model with a similar design and functionality.

The Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation speaker is designed for streaming one’s own digital music library, content from streaming services like Spotify, and content airing on Internet radio stations.

The upgraded cube-shaped speaker features an illuminated volume dial, proximity sensor, and full set of controls.

The proximity sensor means the speaker’s dial lights up as the user reaches toward it.

In addition to playback controls, users have direct access to radio stations, playlists, and Spotify resume, among other things.

The House of Marley Get Together Mini is a great speaker for the price with its cool bamboo design, decent sound quality, and range of other features.

For a limited time, the speaker is only $99.99, which is $50 off its normal price.

The deal may be for today only, so it's worth acting quickly if you're interested.

Best Buy is offering a pretty sweet deal on one of the best wireless speakers for the money: the House of Marley Get Together Mini portable Bluetooth speaker.

Perhaps one of the coolest things about House of Marley products is that they usually feature a relatively unique design.

The speaker has a bamboo faceplate with a nice textured body, and we quite like it.

This wireless Bluetooth speaker usually rings in at $350 but Amazon is now offering a 21% discount.

Fire up the bass and drown out the rest of the world for the low price of $275.

The Stanmore II embodies Marshall’s classic retro look, along with its iconic script logo and signature textured vinyl (available in black or cream finish).

This speaker may have undeniable style, but its weight of 10.5 pounds doesn’t exactly scream portability.

It may not look all that different from its predecessors, but the changes can be felt as soon as you spark it to life.

Among Marshall’s lineup of speakers, the Stanmore II is the most versatile and reliable option for either big or small rooms.

Today, Sonos invited media to a briefing scheduled for late August that will focus on its plans for the fall.

These showcases almost always feature new hardware, but what might Sonos have in store?

In terms of existing devices, I think the Play:5 is the most likely candidate to be upgraded.

The second-gen Play:5 launched in 2015 — so it’s certainly due for a revision — and Sonos could easily add a voice mic array to its most premium and best-sounding speaker in the same way it did with the Sonos One.

The company would include other enhancements to audio performance in a potential Sonos Five since it has previously said that it doesn’t upgrade products unless there’s plenty of reason to do so.

With Amazon said to be at work on a high-end Echo speaker, the timing would fit if Sonos wants to head off its competitors.

The Pixel 4 rumor season never stops, even if Samsung is having a major smartphone launch.

9to5Google, which had its earlier Pixel 4 rumors confirmed by Google before the phone has even launched, has a fresh set of Pixel 4 rumors for us.

First up: the Pixel 4 will supposedly have a 90Hz "smooth display" feature, just like the OnePlus 7 Pro.

This means the entire interface should refresh at 90 frames per second instead of the usual 60, which—on the OnePlus 7 Pro at least—proved to be an absolute revelation for UI smoothness and making the phone feel fast and responsive.

Until 90Hz displays came along, Google was the leader in Android UI "smoothness," so it'll be interesting to see what the company can do with a faster display.

Quicker display refresh rates are rapidly becoming the next big upgrade for Android phones—as evidenced by the aforementioned 90Hz OnePlus phone and even a 120Hz OLED screen from Asus with the ROG Phone 2.

Smart speakers are a hot topic these days and, unfortunately for their makers, not in a good way.

Almost all three of the big names have been dragged into controversy but the very first one to be named was Amazon and its Alexa assistant.

Given the heat, some might consider it bad timing to launch smart speakers using these AI assistants.

That’s not stopping cable provider Altice from announcing the Amplify home speaker.

For example, it offers hands-free voice control of set-top boxes, from Altice, of course.

Those include changing channels or even access to streaming apps like Netflix, provided they’re on the company’s Altice One platform.

What better way to share your love of music than with a portable Bluetooth speaker to blast your favorite songs?

The Kilburn sports Marshall’s vintage look, its iconic script logo, and the kind of road-worthy vinyl (available in black or cream finish) you’ll find on stage at rock venues all over the world.

Despite its compact build and weight (under 7 pounds), this speaker is louder than most others in its class.

Controls are located at the top of the speaker and embellished with a brushed metal backplate, a tactile power switch, and gold-embossed knobs to fine-tune bass, treble, and volume to your liking.

It may look vintage but it comes with modern capabilities like a Bluetooth pairing button for wireless connections.

Since we’re all about sharing, two compatible devices can be connected so you and a friend can take turns being the DJ.

Though the Studio3 noise-canceling headphones are also on sale right now.

This portable Bluetooth speaker by Dr. Dre is a solid performer that offers top-notch sound quality and exceptionally loud volume.

You can get one in either black or white for a whopping $66 less on Amazon.

Start partying with this audio beast for $110 instead of the usual $180.

Weighing in at 27 ounces, or about 1.7 pounds, it leans on the heavy side but is still pretty lightweight.
